De Amerikaanse uitvoering is herkenbaar aan diverse specifieke details en is tegenwoordig geliefd onder verzamelaars. Mede door het zonnige klimaat, waardoor de auto in een harde staat is behouden. De auto werd in 2020 naar Nederland geïmporteerd en vanaf dat moment gerestaureerd. Daarbij is niet alleen aandacht besteed aan het uiterlijk, maar vooral ook aan de techniek. De restauratie is uitgevoerd met het doel om de SM daadwerkelijk goed en betrouwbaar te kunnen rijden. Dit exemplaar beschikt over chassisnummer 00SB9552 en motornummer C114/1 - 250.100. De auto beschikt over een uitgebreide documentatie van de uitgevoerde werkzaamheden. In 2024 is de SM getaxeerd op een waarde van € 72.000. Bij de auto zijn reserve-onderdelen aanwezig, evenals de originele Californische kentekenplaten. Een interessant detail is de combinatie van de vroege SB-carrosserie met de Amerikaanse specificatie en de automatische transmissie. EXTERIEUR De carrosserie is tijdens de restauratie opnieuw gespoten in het zeer karakteristieke Bronze Foncé Metallic, een kleur die prachtig aansluit bij het extravagante karakter van de SM. De lange, lage carrosserie, de gestroomlijnde vorm en de volledig geïntegreerde verlichting maken de SM nog altijd een van de meest herkenbare ontwerpen uit de jaren zeventig. Het ontwerp was afkomstig van Citroëns stylingafdeling onder leiding van Robert Opron. Bijzonder is de aerodynamica: de SM was niet alleen ontworpen om mooi te zijn, maar ook om bij hoge snelheid efficiënt door de lucht te snijden. De auto beschikte over een automatisch meedraaiend koplampsysteem bij de Europese uitvoering; de Amerikaanse auto's kregen vanwege de toenmalige regelgeving een afwijkende koplampconfiguratie. Zowel ruiten als rubbers, chroomwerk en velgen verkeren in een goede staat met gebruikerssporen die passen bij de leeftijd van de auto. INTERIEUR Het interieur is voorzien van nieuw bruin leder, waardoor de SM een bijzonder luxe en sfeervolle uitstraling heeft. In de middenconsole is een radiospeler gemonteerd. Het interieur verkeert in een goede staat met gebruikerssporen die passen bij de leeftijd van de auto. De cockpit is typisch Citroën: futuristisch, asymmetrisch en sterk op de bestuurder gericht. De instrumenten en bedieningselementen zijn duidelijk ontworpen vanuit de gedachte dat een SM meer moest zijn dan alleen een snelle auto. De auto beschikt onder andere over elektrisch bedienbare ramen en airconditioning. De airconditioning is in 2023 opnieuw gevuld. TECHNISCH Onder de motorkap bevindt zich de bekende Maserati V6, waarmee de SM technisch gezien een zeer bijzondere combinatie vormt van Franse en Italiaanse techniek. De motor is volledig gereviseerd. Ook diverse kwetsbare Maserati-componenten zijn aangepakt: onderdelen zijn gereviseerd of vervangen door verbeterde exemplaren, met als doel de betrouwbaarheid en bruikbaarheid van de auto te vergroten. Ook de besturing is bijzonder: de SM maakte gebruik van Citroëns DIRAVI-systeem, een snelheidsafhankelijke hydraulische stuurbekrachtiging met automatische terugloop naar de rechtuitstand. Dat was in het begin van de jaren zeventig zeer vooruitstrevend. De auto rijdt goed en is technisch opgebouwd met het oog op daadwerkelijk gebruik. Citroën combineerde zijn eigen revolutionaire hydropneumatische techniek met een Maserati V6, nadat Citroën in 1968 Maserati had overgenomen. This is partly due to the sunny climate, which has helped to preserve the car in excellent condition. The car was imported to the Netherlands in 2020 and has been restored since then. Attention has been paid not only to the exterior but, above all, to the mechanical aspects. The restoration was carried out with the aim of ensuring the SM could be driven properly and reliably.
